03.31.08 • The National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) selected Christopher Chadbourne & Associates (CCA) to design the ‘Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise’ exhibit as part of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
African American photographer Addison Scurlock and his sons captured middle class Washington, D.C. over nearly a century from 1904 to 1994.

“It is thrilling to see these great faces that Scurlock captured so poignantly a hundred years ago,” said CCA Director of Design Michael Biddle, “These amazing photos pull viewers into another time and place.”
The museum is expected to open in Spring of 2009. CCA is honored to work with NMAAHC Director Lonnie Bunch and his colleagues at this important new historical museum.
“Ultimately, the National Museum of African American History and Culture should be a place of meaning, of reflection, of laughter and of hope,” explained Bunch. “It should be a beacon that reminds us of what we were, what challenges we still face and point us towards what we can become.”
